Depression Gene Identified

Thoughts

According to Channel 10 Late News about 45 seconds ago, researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney have identified a gene that is directly linked to depression. Interesting. Let's hope I can type all this stuff down before I forget it!

The study was carried out over 25 years and shows a direct link between a specific gene and feelings of depression. While the gene doesn't cause depression, it can trigger it when give the right stimulus, such as a negative life expereince.

It showed that when people without the specific gene encountered difficulty in life, 30% became seriously depressed, compared to a whopping 80% occurance in people with the gene.

The good news, it is treatable. I'm looking into it.

Palmer Hyperhidrosis

Thoughts

For as long as I can remember I've had sweaty hands. I'm not talking about if I'm exercising, or meeting someone you have a crush on sort of sweaty hands… I have sweaty hands CONSTANTLY, and my dad does to; so I thought it was just a freak genetic disorder.

It's horrible, I literally have to have a small fan next to my computer keyboard and mouse to keep my hands (sort of) dry, and even then they're still damp!!! And it really screws up my self esteem; whenever I shake hands with anyone it's so embarrasing.

Well I finally found out what it's called, and apparently it's treatable :D :D :D

Palmar hyperhidrosis is a condition marked by excessive perspiration of the palms beyond physiological necessity. It is caused by hyperactivity of the sweat glands in the sympathetic nervous system. Palmar hyperhidrosis is a hereditary sweating disorder, which often begins during childhood with no known cause.

Because palmer hyperhidrosis is aggravated by stress as minor as shaking or holding hands, it has significant social and psychological impact on patients afflicted with this disorder.

People with palmer hyperhidrosis disorder are in constant awareness of their condition and they have to live with it. For this reason, most hyperhidrosis sufferers go to great lengths to avoid contacts with others by hiding their hands in their pockets or under their arms. They may lose confidence in their ability to socialize or interact with others and as a result may become frustrated and withdrawn.

Cure For Sweaty Hands

Common form of treatments is available for palmer hyperhidrosis or excessive sweaty hands. The mild forms of palmer hyperhidrosis or excessive sweaty hands respond well to oral medications such as Drysol or even baby powder. Minimally invasive surgical treatment of palmer hyperhidrosis is reserved for severe or massive palmer hyperhidrosis. The treatment is called thoracoscopic sympathectomy.

Pregnancy Support Line

Thoughts

The Liberal Party in Australia is planning to set up a 'pregnancy support line' to reduce Australia's abortion rate, which apparently is very high by industralised standards.

But here's the catch: the support line will be outsourced to, amongst others, religious organisations, and NOT to pro-choice organisations. The plot thickens.

So Tony Abbott couldn't hold on to control of the RU486 pill, so instead he'll brainwash vunerable people who call a supposed 'neutral pregnancy support line'.

Conservatives…

Should Daniel Craig Be Bond?

Media

The people on http://craignotbond.com/ sure don't think so! I though Brosnan was a fantastic Bond.

Huey’s Hints – Poached Eggs

Media

From Huey's Cooking Club Website:

An easy way to poach an egg perfectly is to bring a pan of water to a simmer, add a little vinegar and then break in the eggs.

Simmer for exactly 1 min, cover, turn off heat and leave for exactly 10 mins.

John Howard PM For 10 Years

Thoughts

John Howard has now been the Prime Minister of The Commonwealth of Australia for 10 years.

Let's see what he's achieved for this great country during his decade term in office:

  • The worst environmental record of any Australian government for over 50 years
  • Throwing out any chance of Australia becoming a republic during his term, keeping the Queen of the United Kingdom our head of state. We are not an independent country, just a 'self governing Commonwalth nation'.
  • Sucking up to the US and making Australia a mere state of the US in the eyes of the global community
  • Involving Australia in the illegal war in Iraq, a decision most Australians opposed, and many argue has made Australia more of a terrorist target not less
  • Reforms to higher education funding making studying expensive, despite the fact the finance minister Peter Costello received free university education himself
  • The GST
  • The removal of university textbooks from the GST excemption list
  • Supporting the mandatory detention of refugees in horrendus conditions despite the fact it is in breach of the United Nations human rights code

Good work Mr Howard, looking foward to the next 10 years :).

Israel Brown In Japan

Travel

Just finished Israel's latest posts on The Overnightscape forums, he's now on his Japanese holiday. I'm so green with envy I could walk through particularly lush foliage and be completely camouflaged.

He's got some interesting shots of the landscape around the apartment he's in, and they look surprisingly like Singapore (sans-powerlines). I won't post them here because he's moving them to his ImageBucket account at a later date, but if you want to see them for yourself, head over to the thread.

Israel Brown is the guy who does the Crap & Stuff podcast by the way: the 'sponsor' of the latest Rubenerd Show for the 26th Feb 2006! ;).

Can anyone make out what this message is supposed to be?

“One please.”

My friends call me ~The Powerhh0use~ I suppose
due to my short height but big energy! I need
someone that can match my enerrgy!

“Might I help you make up your mind?” the inspector asked, and pressed a button on the wall. The portal into outer blackness squealed open once again, and the robot grabbed Bill and started to push.

I did not edit ANY of this message! What's the point of cryptic spam? Isn't the whole point of spam to try to coax money out of me?

Rubenerd Show Made It Great!

Media

The Rubenerd Show has reached new highs: it has been mentioned on Make It Great!

I was reviewing my stats today, and I noticed I got a bit of traffic from the RubenerdShow, a fun podcast that I’ve listened to from time to time. Ruben Schade is the host, and he does quite the variety show. So I went over to his website (it was being re-done last time I peeked in), and lo and behold, I see a link to Make It Great! on his main page. Wow! I was quite flattered.

Then I looked at his most recent podcast and I see Make It Great! – 400 posts. I quickly downloaded his podcast, and about 25 or so minutes in, I hear a mention of my 400 posts…Very cool! Thank you for noticing Ruben, and for all the kind words you said about my blog and my writing. I really appreciate.

If you’re in the market for a variety podcast, I encourage you to subscribe to the Rubenerd Show today! Who knows, you might even hear me on a show one day with Ruben, which would give me 2 fun podcast partners!?!

Make it a great day!
Phil

My day is great now Phil thanks to your kind words :D.
