Basque Ceasefire

Thoughts

Basque location map

Bit of a geography lesson today, on the Basque Country.

The Basque Country (Euskal Herria in Basque) is a cultural region that straddles the western Pyrenees mountains that define the border between France and Spain, extending down to the coast of the Bay of Biscay. It corresponds more or less with the historical homeland of the Basque people and language.

Seems the ETA has declared a ceasefire with the Spanish government. Good stuff, let's hope it lasts.

The Business of Leadership

Thoughts

Refreshing perspective by the always-interesting Phil Gerbyshak at MakeItGreat.org:

Phil Gerbyshak

Great question posed by Rocky Noe today: “What really makes people better leaders?” I don’t have the “perfect” answer, I do know that for me, a great leader is willing to do what others will not, for no reason other than that they need to be done.

Here here! If only it were true.

You Can’t Fight Evil in High Heels

Anime

While I was looking for a picture for the XBox post below I saw the latest reincarnation of Techmo's Dead or Alive fighting game series, I think they're up to version 920 or something.

I know anime computer games don't exactly adhere to any laws of physics, but how can you fight people when you're wearing high heels? Most people have enough difficulty just walking in them! :D. Not that I would know personally…

Reminds me of what my sister used to say about PS Sailor Moon: "you can't fight evil in high heels!"

XBox 360 Launched in Australia

Hardware

So the XBox 360 has been launched in Australia. Why don't I care?

  • It’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen since the first XBox
  • The XBox 360 game selection stinks
  • I have a restraining order on any Microsoft products
  • I’m waiting on the PlayStation 3

Enough said

Great Intro to C++

Software

In one of my courses at uni I'm learning object-oriented programming in C++. Coming from a VB, Perl, PHP, C background OOP is pretty difficult to fathem, let alone trying to learn C++ as well.

This website is the best I've found so far to start you off on C++. It assumes basic programming knowledge, but is great for beginners. It had my back ;)

Scroll down the page until you find a heading: "A Simple C++ Program"

Cheers.

The Power Mac 4400/200

Hardware

With all the talk recently that Windows XP has been hacked onto the MacBook Pro and the 17 inch iMac, apparently an older generation Mac could run Windows/DOS:

The Apple Power Macintosh 4400/200 (PC), based on the Tanzania architecture co-developed by Apple and Motorola, features a 200 MHz PowerPC 603e processor, 16 or 32 MB of RAM, and a 1.2 GB or 2.0 GB hard drive in an industry-standard desktop case. The 4400 series is unique because it is the first Apple Mac to use primarily industry-standard parts to keep the price low. The PC-Compatible version ships with a 166 MHz Cyrix 6×86 processor card that can have up to 80 MB of RAM dedicated to the DOS/Windows operating system.

The ABC ‘Left Wing’ Culture

Media

Privately ask leading conservatives what they hate about the ABC and they’ll focus on programming and presenters. They loathe 7.30 Report presenter Kerry O’Brien (a former Labor Party employee) and his occasional fill-in, Maxine McKew (whose partner, Bob Hogg, is a former ALP national secretary).

Don’t start them on Phillip Adams and Radio National whose programs, they say, largely reflect the interests of the left – opposition to Israel, support for Aborigines, gays and lesbians, refugees, welfare recipients and scepticism about the Iraq war (In fairness to the conservatives, the Labor right made similar noises while in government.)

~ The Bulletin: ABC At War

What's wrong with all of those "interests of the left?" Are you telling me right wing conservatives don't support Aborigines, hate gays, lesbians, refugees, welfare, and thing the Iraq war is a good thing?

Okay, guess I answered my own question.

Cyclone Larry Just As Bad As Tracy

Thoughts

If you haven't heard yet, Cyclone Larry has been tearing his way through northern Queensland, destroying property, flattening houses and causing widespread damage to farms: 95% of Australia's banana crop is gone and thousands have lost their jobs overnight. Reports are saying the winds have been reaching 290km/h.

For more information, you can visit these pages:

Peter Beattie (Queensland's Premier) has declared a state of emergency and is urging everyone to stay inside to avoid getting hit with flying debris, and to keep televisions and radios on.
