Comforting Military Grade Encryption Spam

Internet

Ruben picks apart the useless spam he receives from the spamming spammers who spam him with their spammingly spammish spam.

Military Grade Encryption is Only the Start

At PayPal, we want to increase your security and comfort level with every transaction. From our Buyer and Seller Protection Policies to our Verification and Reputation systems, we’ll help to keep you safe.

That's precious! Military Grade Encryption? If this bulk email is an example of how a business builds awareness of their "Military Grade Encryption" I wonder if government agencies send their encryption information to millions of people through insecure email? Oh boy.

And they're concerned with my comfort levels? Comfort???

These spammers are as stupid as they look.

Another Wasted $30 Million

Thoughts

So Marion in the sothern suburbs is getting a new multi-million dollar olympic-size swimming complex to foster a new generation of Olympic and Commonwealth games champions blah blah blah.

Good thing too, because all the other ones in Australia aren't here, and we have all this money and nothing to do with it…

  • Poorly maintained roads
  • Lack of hospital beds for elective surgery
  • Lack of childcare facilities

But the richest part of all, the reporter for Channel 10 reporting the event said how he couldn't understand why some of the locals didn't like the idea. I mean, just because they didn't get consulted first even though they live there…

Hey, but at least we can swim.

Biometric Passports in Singapore

Hardware

I studied in Singapore most of my schooling years so whenever I see an article about Singapore in international news sites etc, I have to read it.

In this case according to C|Net News.com Singapore is unveiling "biometric passports".

From August, all passport holders in Singapore can apply for new travel documents with additional security features designed for international standards.

The biometric passport, called BioPass, was unveiled Friday by the government. Each e-passport contains a polycarbonate page that is embedded with a contactless chip, carrying the owner’s facial and fingerprint biometric identifiers.

Singapore, along with Australia, New Zealand and the United States, has been involved in an International Live Test since January. These trials are expected to be completed by April 15.

Cynical people might roll their eyes and say this is the next step to Big Brother, but personally anything I see that can help stamp out (no pun intended… passports…) identity theft is a good thing.

I guess my concern is if/when in the future they'll have GPS RFID tags embedded in passports so governments can track your every move. THAT would be scary.

Finally Got Wireless Working At UniSA!

Internet

I think the AirPort card in my trusty-retro iBook G3 must have been stuffed, because I could never make a wireless connection at uni at all, but since getting this MacBook Pro I'm on the internet typing this post as we speak from the library, fasctianting stuff!

The uni's policy is that while they allow the use of wireless networks on Mac OS X and Linux, they only support Windows 2000/XP. Charming.

Anyway there are a few quirks to get the wireless connection working at uni and their site only really details setting up in Windows, but I figured it out under Mac, so here's how to do it:

  • Open Internet Connect, choose AirPort from the toolbar
  • Connect to the UniSA network, no username/password required

This will give you access to the uni network and the local intranet (such as uni email and course homepages) but if you want full internet access, you need to establish a VPN connection:

  • Open Internet Connect again, choose VPN from the toolbar
  • Choose the PPTP radio button
  • For Server Address, type 192.168.12.1
  • Type your UniSA username/password in the respective fields
  • Click Connect
  • Close Internet Connect, open System Prefrences
  • Choose Network, then double-click the new VPN (PPTP) connection
  • Click Proxies, then check the Web Proxy and Secure Web Proxy
  • With each, type “www-proxy.unisa.edu.au” 8080
  • Click Apply Now

Whew, done :).

Coles Stuck In The 1950’s?

Media

If you watch any form of commercially syndicated television, you no doubt would have seen many (many, many, many) times their latest advertisment talking about how Coles Supermarkets "give discounts on the products that really matter"; in this case baby products such as nappies etc.

The problem is, all the kids are being cared for by their mums, the mums are doing the grocery shopping and the checkout chicks have all the jobs at the… checkouts.

No dads anywhere. Because dads are blubbering ingrates who know nothing about raising children, or grocery shopping.

Hey, while you're at it Coles, get the dad in the next scene to come home from work and demand a home cooked dinner from the wife after she's finished ironing all his shirts for the next week.

I’m Not The Only One Who Hates Rove

Media

~ Rove interviewing Pamela Anderson, 2006 (Wikipedia)

When I moved back here to Australia last year I saw my first episodes of Rove Live, and it thought it was okay. The problem is, aside from a set change the show hasn't progressed at all; in fact the jokes are getting worse and worn out, the skits are just boring, and his interviews make me cringe.

And apparently I'm not the only one fed up with him! Look at some of these quotes from the IMDB article on Rove Live (and no I'm not being biased, about 80% of the people who wrote feel this way):

I’m going to make this long and Moderatly sweet, rove Mcmanus is the worst excuse for a comedian i have seen in my many long years.maybe his show had something when he started but now every Tuesday night he shows us further how sad and poor at being funny a person can be.I think one of his many major folly’s was stealing material from “the Simpson’s” and using it while hosting the ARIA’s, seriously his performance that night was the worst i have ever see, Carson Kressley could have done a better job.His show needs to be canceled before he further embarrasses himself and the foolish goons who voted to award him his ill gotten gold and silver Logie’s.

~ mickcos

Rove just doesn’t have things together enough to be host of a nationally televised show. I think Australian audiences can be partly to blame here because the audiences of Rove Live are far too forgiving, if they didn’t laugh at everything slightly humorous that Rove did he might have to actually try to be funny. “Tonight Live with Steve Vizard” and “Denton”, both on Seven, were a lot better than Rove Live just on the strength of their hosts, who were not self-destructive idiots like Rove.

~ Steve West

But this one takes the cake:

Rove LIVE’ is, put simply, not funny. At least not beyond the juvenile, stale and repetitive brand of funny that ‘comedians’ such as Adam Sandler and Martin Lawrence endorse. The jokes are lame, Rove himself is pretentious and the show tries too hard to be funny. What is perhaps saddest is that it seems Rove is genuinely amused by his own jokes which are superficial, shallow and not particularly entertaining. Also sad is that with celebrities like Renee Zellweger, he makes seemingly endless innuendo at the two of them getting together in attempt to get a bellow of laughter out of the viewer. I guess he must be succeeding though, because ‘Rove LIVE’ has constantly high ratings. I don’t put this down to the creativity and comedic skills of those involved with the show, however. I put it down to the fact that as audiences are subjected to ‘stupid’ humour (i.e, films such as ‘The Animal’, ‘Joe Dirt’, ‘Scary Movie’, ‘Dude, Where’s My Car?’) more and more regularly, audiences feel that this is the level by which good comedy is measured.

One of the regular segments featured on ‘Rove LIVE’ is entitled “What the?”.

All I have to say, is my thoughts exactly.

Horizontal line (<hr />) tags are useful for diving up useful sections on a webpage, but thesedays I find it easier just to use a <div> with a "border" property in CSS, but if you prefer to use horizontal line tags, this website is invaluable:
