Pokuga Test Spam

Internet

Ruben picks apart the useless spam he receives from the spamming spammers who spam him with their spammingly spammish spam. For all the spam he has picked apart, visit the spam category… sounds like a Monty Python routine.

University Chronicles of Ruben

Internet

The University Chronicles of Ruben has been launched!

…[this blog] is designed purely for detailing my university work, mostly to keep track of it myself. If you’re out looking for ripping yarns, witty banter or cheap shots at John Howard, you will not find them here.

I also don’t intend to post to this every day, only when I am in the middle of a university assignment, work project or similar undertaking. I’m finding uni difficult not just due to the workload and increasing complexity of the material, but also purely from an organisation point of view. It is my hope I can use this blog to help with this.

So if Computer Science or Economics are your thing, check it out if you want :).

Rubenerd Show 155: The parody of the Overnightscape episode

Show

Podcast: Play in new window · Download

10:00 – This episode of the Rubenerd Show is a good natured parody of the Overnightscape, and does not represent the views of the aforementioned podcast programme or Frank Edward Nora, nor was this program in any way sponsored or endorsed by the Overnightscape or Frank Edward Nora.

WordPress 2.0.4

Software

Just upgraded my two WordPress powered sites to version 2.0.4. The Rubenerd Show went from 2.0.3 to 2.0.4, and the Rubenerd Blog went from 2.0.1.

If you read the instructions (aka: RTFM) upgrades can be painless. I was very impressed, this was my first WordPress upgrade :).

“If you’re feeling really rubbish, and you have some good food, it just makes you feel good.”

I wholeheartedly agree Jamie :).

The SwiMP3 Player

Hardware

The New SwiMP3 underwater MP3 player is an incredible audio experience. Imagine listening to hours of your own music during your swim workout. The SwiMP3?s innovative sound transfer technology offers exception underwater sound quality. Standard players rely on the transmission of sound through air or water causing the swimmer to perceive only muffled noise. The SwiMP3 uses bone conduction ? the direct transfer of sound vibrations from the cheek bone to the inner ear ? to provide the swimmer with exceptional sound clarity. The SwiMP3 is fully waterproof and can be used with all the competitive swim strokes.

Includes a USB cable to connect the player to your computer and charge the batteries, 128 MB of RAM for music storage, Music Match software (not required to download music on the player), one pair of Lane 4 OxyGen 2 Goggles (although the player will work with other goggles), 90 day warranty.

I have three thoughts on the subject: by having something strapped to your head would that affect your performance, hydrodynamically or through distraction? I guess we wouldn't see these in the Commonwealth Games any time soon. Would you be able to listen to podcasts and audio magazines, such as… oh I don't know, say… the Rubenerd Show? And even for a self confessed nerd who doesn't like to swim, even this seems too much ;).

Bad Connection, Bad Connection

Internet

The last two posts I posted (posting a post? I never would have figured) took (rounded down to nearest minute) 8 and 12 minutes respectively to post. This is on Australian 1.5Mbit "broadband".

I miss my Singapore MaxOnline 8Mbit connection :(.

Liberty Versus Security

Travel

The version I knew was "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security will achieve neither", but this passage seems even better. :)

It's a real shame that Australia is following the way of the United States in terms of "national security". The way I see it, if we radically alter our lives by making them more complicated and difficult, the terrorists have won already.

I remember listening to Lawrence Lessig give a talk on IT Conversations about copyright law and how a restrictive change can be implemented very easily, but it can take a very long time to undo. I think the same applies to this as well.

Repeating Words, Lost Meaning

Travel

Is it just me or does anyone else flinch when the word "freedom" is mentioned these days?

Before you get any funny ideas I'm in full support of democratic systems of government and capitalism (well, sort of) and I believe the idea of freedom is noble, but I think in the United States they've said "freedom" so many times it's sadly become an overused cliche to us in the rest of the world. Say the word too many times, and it loses it's meaning, know what I mean?

Anyway enough yakking, where the hell are my freedom fries? :D
