Windows XP at Uni

Software

Bill Gates introducing XP

I'm sitting here at the uni typing away at some work, and the lack of features in Windows XP that I'm used to in Mac OS X and my FreeBSD with XFce box are really starting to get to me!!

What do I miss? No system wide spell checking, something not Internet Explorer, no virtual desktops, no Expose.

Now just to be fair, I was brought up on Windows 3.0 and 3.1x, right up to 2000 before I was the first (and still only) person in the family to dump Windows.

Ruben is Romantic: Quizilla

Internet

The result: A romantic!?

Okay so somebody who will remain anomymous (cough)Oracle in Singapore(cough) asked me to do this test. What sort if person did they say I was?

THE ROMANTIC

The most most most important for you is that she is romantic. You love it to get/give love letters, red roses or just to be in a romantic atmosphere. She must make you think that you are the most beautiful and most important person in the world. Your heart is soft and pure and you would never cheat as long as you love your partner. If he would cheat you, you would not hide your feelings, but show your opposite how much she hurt you because you trusted in her and never thought she could do this to you.

TIP: Don’t believe everything. You tend to be much to credulous in some situations!

And he's single ladies!

Animated Doors

Media

Remember the iconset in the Windows 3.0 and 3.1 Program Manager? Remember those little door icons?

Well thanks to the wonders of modern high definition video, they've been animated.

Look at them go! Watch closely too, their timing is not quite the same so eventually they stop opening and closing in sync. Blu-Ray Video has nothing on this :D.

Sailor Moon Season One DVD Reviewed

Anime

Like Speed Racer and Dragonball Z, I remember watching Sailor Moon as a kid getting ready for school first thing in the morning on Agro's Cartoon Connection when we lived in Brisbane. Whatever happened to that show? They screened (unfortunately) the english dub.

Anyway one of my favourite blogs to read Need Coffee (the name originally drew me to it!) posted this review regarding the first original uncut season on DVD:

One of the truly interesting things about this series is that Usagi, while annoying at times, is so imperfect. How tiresome is it to have only perfect heroes all the time? Usagi is a clutz, doesn’t do very well in school, and is more than a little silly; she prefers shopping and playing video games to saving the universe, but that’s what makes her so approachable as a heroine. She’s normal.

In short, if you’re a Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon fan, this set is an absolute must-have. If you’ve never quite gotten into this show before, then check it out now; the inclusion of the missing dialogue and scenes make the whole thing more intelligible, though no less fun. There’s something here for many kinds of fans, from romantic comedy to science fiction or even mystery. From middle aged men to young girls, there’s just something about Usagi and her friends that appeals to people, once they give her a chance. Even if this show stays in the “guilty pleasure” category, let Tuxedo Kamen, Luna, Rei, and the rest take you for a very wild and action-packed ride.

AAA Mortgage Solutions

Internet

AAA Mortgage Solutions

I don't know about you, but I don't really consider a company reputable if their website looks unprofessional or haphazard. These days there really isn't an excuse for any company to have a cheesy, low budget website, and corportations should be viewing their site design as being as critical to their image as other aspects of their marketing.

Case in point, the AAA Mortgage Solutions Australia site. Their website doesn't look old fashioned, it doesn't look difficult to use, it just looks rubbish. I sure as hell wouldn't part money with a company that looks like this, let alone one which is designed purely to provide financial services.

Of course, it also doesn't help when your company's logo looks cheesy and was obviously named back when people actually still used the Yellow Pages so they would be sorted above their competition.

Its all a bit hard to swallow. Maybe I should just open my mouth like the doc asked and say "AAA…"

Even Windows Vista’s PRICES Suck

Software

Windows 2000
On my last remaining Windows machine I still have Windows 2000!

According to this post by Ed Bott on his ZDNet Blog, the prices for Windows Vista have been leaked in Canada. This is interesting especially for me here because the Canadian Dollar and Australian Dollars are roughly at parity.

FULL versions (all prices Canadian)
Windows Vista Ultimate $499
Windows XP Professional w/SP2 $429
Windows Vista Business $379
Windows Vista Home Premium $299
Windows Vista Home Basic $259
Windows XP Home w/SP2 $259

UPGRADE versions (all prices Canadian)
Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade $299
Windows XP Professional w/SP2 Upgrade $259
Windows Vista Business Upgrade $249
Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade $199
Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade $129
Windows XP Home w/SP2 Upgrade $129

This compares to the "Vista Ultimate" equivilent, sole version of Mac OS X Desktop which is going for $149.00 Canadian, or PC-BSD Desktop which is going for $0.00 Canadian!

Without even getting to the bagging out of how bad a marketing scheme 8 billion versions of the one product is going to be and how it will just serve to confuse the public, how the hell can Microsoft justify these exorbitant prices?

I am a Mac OS X and FreeBSD user now, but on my lone Windows machine which I keep for gaming (AMD Athlon XP 2800+) I'll be keeping Windows 2000 for now thanks.

Rubenerd Show

Hey everyone,

I am in the process of moving to Kuala Lumpur as we speak, and my mixer board, microphone and other audio equipment has been packed up to ship. Until I'm settled in Malaysia and with all my equipment set up again, the show has been put on hiatus. For the next week if you're still interested why not check out some previous episodes?

The Rubenerd Blog will continue as per normal. Well, as normal as it usually is.

Thanks everyone for your support, I'll be back on the internet airwaves soon!

Cheers,
Ruben

Slashdot

I've been a reader of Slashdot on and off since the end of 1998, but I never registered for an account. The discussions seemed lively and interesting enough without my opinion.

I've since registered though. Any truth to that "long time reader, first time poster" logic? Only took 8 years ;).

Beppe Grillo’s Blog

Thoughts

Now this blog is interesting! It appears to be an Italian political site, but it does have an English version as well for those of us who's grasp of Italian hinges on our knowlege of food.

We discuss: Citizen Primaries, Ecology, Economics, Energy, Health/Medicine, Information, Modern Slaves, Politics, Technology/Internet, Transport/Getting About, Wailing Wall

While I don't entirely agree with some of the posts, it still makes for very interesting reading on global affairs, especially from an Italian perspective!
