Virtual Apple ][

Software

Virtual Apple II

Have you ever wanted to play your classic Apple ][ Games on your new Apple?

This programs looks great, it even has a virtual printer that outputs to PDF! As my dad would say "me think it mazing!"

Virtual ][ lets you play the old Apple games, because it supports all graphics modes, lets you control the game paddles with a USB game pad or mouse and emulates the internal speaker. When you want to temporarily interrupt gameplay, Virtual ][ allows you to save the entire virtual machine, and continue later on from where you left off.

But Virtual ][ also supports more “serious” software, because it emulates many peripheral devices: floppy disk, hard disk, mouse, matrix printer, even cassette tape! It is also able to emulate the Z80A processor, allowing you to run the CP/M operating system.

And for the technically inclined: you can configure the machine by “inserting” and “removing” emulated peripheral cards, change the CPU speed, or even install your own emulated character generator ROM. The “Inspector” feature allows you to closely observe the behavior of the emulated machine and debug Apple II programs.

If you have original diskettes and a working Apple II, Virtual ][ can help you convert the diskettes to the Macintosh, even if they are “copy protected”.

Here's the shot of the virtual printer in all it's monochromic glory:

Are You An Evil Liberal?

Thoughts

Put Your Beliefs to the Test!

My mum and I laughed out loud when we read the blurb for this book!

Too many self-professing Christians hold a schizophrenic worldview-a toxic mixture of Christian and humanist beliefs that undermine Biblical living and the potential to change the world for Christ. Recognizing the problem, Brannon Howse developed a test to help people assess their personal worldviews. Since it was first put online in 2001, more than 50,000 people have taken the test to rank themselves on a scale from “Strong Christian Thinker” to ” Secular Humanist Thinker.”

And what does this book help to protect you from?

Here are some of the fallacious, humanistic ideas this book will protect you against:

  • All religions are equal.
  • Since the Bible says judge not lest you be judged, no one should ever judge the actions, beliefs or behavior of others.
  • Science, history, and literature can and should be taught without a religious or philosophical foundation.
  • Evolution is scientific while creationism is religious.
  • You cannot legislate morality.
  • Jesus Christ believed in socialism, not free enterprise.
  • Since one of the Ten Commandments is “thou shall not kill,” God is opposed to all war and to capital punishment.
  • America’s Founding Fathers violated New Testament principles when they founded the United States.
  • Mankind is basically good.

And this guy is serious!

Anyway I'd better not take the test, I'm too much of an "evil" liberal I think ;). If you think you have what it takes, you should give it a shot!

Israel Brown on Legitimate E-Mail

Media

Israel Brown

Just a warning message, if you are not a human being don't email Israel Brown:

I’m still concentrating on other things right now. I just wanted to pop up for a bit to comment on something I received as e-mail recently. I say that I always answer my e-mail, and it is true – I answer legitimate e-mail from *people* who don’t talk like spam-bots.

If you write to me and say something like “hey dude, hows the crap an stuff hangin. r u japanese???hmm?” as one “person” did, I’m probably not going to say anything in reply.

However, if you have a real question to ask or want to discuss something, I’ll be more than happy to carry on a conversation! Oh, and if you don’t speak English too well or something, please say so, or else I’ll just assume that your message is spam or that you’re some idiot playing around.

If you haven’t heard all the shows, please give them a listen. Also, feel free to comment on anything. I always answer my legitimate e-mail.

The Enterprise 64 Computer

Software

Enterprise 64 Console

So I was looking for a picture of the Enterprise from Star Trek on Google Images when instead this picture of a retro computer came up: the Enterprise 64.

Now because my dad was working on IBMs at work since the early 1980s all of our computers at home were IBMs (and later compatibles) until I moved to Apple in 1999 when the Windows crashes were starting to affect my ability to maintain my sanity. Yes I know the latest Apples are x86s. Anyway the reason why I say this is because from the beginning we had IBMs at home, no Amigas, no Commodores… we were business machines all the way.

I had never even heard of the Enterprise 64 or 128 until I saw the image on Google Images. It was in Spanish so I went over the the venerable Home Computer Museum (English version) and came up with the machine' vitals:

  • Country: UK
  • Most Common: UK, Hungary
  • Rarity (Euro): very rare
  • Year: 1985
  • CPU: Zilog Z80
  • RAM / ROM: 64 kB / 32 kB
  • Colours: 256
  • Comment: Also known as Mephisto PHC 64 in Germany

If it had a Zilog Z80 chip, was it capable of running CP/M? That would be wicked!

Reading a bit further I found out one of the defining features of this machine was the abnormally large number of expansion ports. To save costs the ports weren't actually sockets, but rather just exposed parts of the mainboard with gold contacts.

You can see diagrams of the ports at Museo8Bits, as well as the original advertising for the machine:

Blast from the past! I'm off to dust off the Commodore 64c from the storeroom… from eBay a few years back!

Heinz Tomato Sauce and Ketchup

Thoughts

Just finished watching a documentary on Discovery Channel about Heinz Ketchup, was fascinating!

Before I go any further though, I want to clear up the naming issue. Being from Australia I always called it tomato sauce instead of ketchup, but in actual fact there is a difference: ketchup has more vinegar and spices than squeezable tomato sauce. In North America the term "tomato sauce" refers to sauces for pasta rather than ketchup, but I think I'll still call it tomato sauce. I'm stubborn and set in my ways.

Anyway some facts I didn't know about Heinz Tomato Sauce:

  • In the Heinz factory in The Netherlands the recipe for their tomato sauce is a well guarded secret.
  • Quality control is extremely strict; chemical testing devices in their labs check the acidity, chemical composition and saltiness of every batch
  • There are 17 different types of bottles used. Plastic squeeze types are the most common, though the German market is still supplied with the old fashioned glass retro bottles
  • Over one million bottles a day are sold to Asia and Europe.

The tomatoes have spoken. Wow, that was a terrible joke, even by my standards.

Bruce Schneier Facts

Thoughts

Found out about this while listening to Security Now (GRC page and TWiT page). It appears Bruce Schneier has been Chuck Norris Fact'ed!

My favourite Bruce Schneier facts:

  • Bruce Schneier once factored a prime.
  • Bruce Schneier can losslessly compress random data by 50%, with his fists.
  • As initialisation vectors, 'Bruce Schneier' and 'Chuck Norris' are interchangeable.
  • Bruce Schneier fully discloses his own vulnerabilities: none.

Bruce Schneier (born January 15, 1963) is an American cryptographer, computer security specialist, and writer. He is the author of several books on computer security and cryptography, and is the founder and chief technology officer of Counterpane Internet Security.

No Roti Canai for Malaysian Astronaut

Thoughts

Roti Canai – Indradi Soemardjan

According to the Malayaian Star (a local English newspaper), the two Malaysians who will be joining the Russian space program won't have access to roti canai or teh tarik after all.

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no teh tarik or roti canai for our Malaysian astronaut when he is up in space next year.

Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said that even during their one-year training at Star City in Moscow, space candidates Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and Kapten Dr Faiz Khaleed have to go without these local favourites because their food and diet would be planned by nutritionists.

At the end of the training, one will join a Russian mission to the International Space Station, while the other would remain on standby, he said. Dr Sheikh Muszaphar and Dr Faiz left for Moscow last night.

In March last year, National Space Agency director-general Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman suggested that Malaysia’s astronaut bring along roti canai and teh tarik to share with other astronauts at the International Space Station as a form of food and cultural exchange.

Teh tarik is a tea drink available in Singapore and Malaysia which is made with condensed milk; Wikipedia has an article on it. You probably already recognise roti canai… mmm… roti canai… Homer Simpson drool.
