Rearranging Gnome titlebar buttons

Software

Given my MacBook Pro's sudden loss of a screen I've had to rely on my ThinkPad X40 with Debian to be my mobile workhorse not just a netbook while I get it fixed. As such I've decided to start a small series of posts on how to make the Gnome desktop more Mac like. Riveting stuff!

If you're used to Mac OS X, the title bar buttons all seem to be in the wrong places in Unix like desktop environments. In KDE and Xfce it's easy to modify their positioning, but in Gnome you have to use the Configuration Editor.

Fire up the Configuration Editor from the Applications > System Tools menu, then expand out the apps folder, then the metacity, then click general. The eighth item down is titled button_label and by default has the following:

menu:minimize,maximize,close

You can emulate the layout of Mac OS X by changing it to:

close,minimize,maximize:menu

Note the American spelling, a few times I wrote that line and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working, turns out I was spelling the words with s not z!

These steps are current as of Gnome 2.26.1.

Lousy networks more effective than filters!

Hardware

No Filter, No Censorship, No Clean Feed, No Great Firewall of Australia

This is probably an Optus phone company problem and not an issue with the iTelephone, but on the off chance that I actually got a 3G signal here in Mawson Lakes over these last few days the data connection is so unreliable nothing finishes loading before I'm given an error. Case in point, my Twitter clients routinely return a secure connection failed error, and it took me over 45 minutes to download the latest Into Your Head episode over 2G. The irony was 45 minutes was still faster than 3G because the latter just kept timing out.

I'd call Optus using my iTelephone to complain, but the phone connection is so spotty I keep having dropped calls. I would hate to wait on hold with Optus for 6 hours only to have the call drop when a customer disservice representative finally answers.

So here's my idea, why not spend the money Stephen Conroy wants earmarked for the Great Australian Firewall to fix Australia's lousy phone networks? Because the other irony is crappy networks are doing a much better job than his proposed filter at blocking content and communications!

I sense a conspiracy brewing.

An iTelephone app advertising fail

Internet

It's been another very busy day today, though admittedly not as bad as yesterday. While waiting in a queue to have my teeth pulled and to deal with a banking teller (I forget which one ended up happening) I was using the Backgrounds application for the iTelephone that does exactly what it sounds like it does. Normally I uninstall anything with advertising on it in a heartbeat, but I enjoy Backgrounds too much. If they had a paid version without advertising, I'd buy it.

Now here's where the silliness starts. While looking for some nice scenery images I came across a page that had a series of night time shots, and below in the advertising slot there appeared a link to a website on sleep. For the first time in many years (at least 5+) I thought an online advertisement looked interesting, so I clicked on it. It took me to a website that was completely designed in Flash.

If the penny hasn't dropped yet, the iPhone does not have Flash… thank heavens! And yet here's a company with a website that's completely Flash driven advertising in a Google Mobile advertisement box that's intended for an iPhone.

It's like when I'm asked if I want new carpet or a patio extension when I'm living in a rented house, or when I visit a social anxiety support group website and the advertisements are for party organisers.

Reminding myself I’m alive at least!

Thoughts

Screenshot of my Optus phone without a data connection.

Had a ridiculously busy day today with a ton of things that went wrong. Two conference calls; five classes with hour long tests in two of them; I had to see my sister off at the airport by taking public transport which took an age in an of itself; I had to work on an assignment because I'm a schedule freak and don't like getting behind on university work I've planned; three lots of homework which I had to sprint to the computer pools at the campus to print because our printer stopped working; I had to deal with another internet banking glitch and subsequent explanation to the landlord; our internet was throttled; and while having one of my usual headrushes I blacked out for a second and hit my head on a light switch, something which doesn't sound like it would hurt much but it really did!

Then after breakfast… I kid. I tell you what though, while days like today aren't exactly the most fun, I think it helps at times to remind ourselves that's it better than the alternative. I'm comfortable saying this now because today is over of course, if someone had come up to me and relayed that sentiment to me earlier today I might have relayed a frozen grilled cheese sandwich at their head. That's my new weapon of choice by the way.

On behalf of the entire writing team here which consists of me, I apologise for the lack of posts today. I've been on a roll publishing posts these last few months, so I can understand it's difficult to miss out, especially if you use Google Reader for example and are used to seeing all my nonsense scattered through your unread posts every day.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to put another ice pack on my bruised forehead and call it a day. Which would be disingenuous to say the least given it's 00:26 and therefore it's very early morning and still dark.

HP LaserJet Error -9672 on Snow Leopard

Error HP LaserJet Error -9672 on Snow Leopard

Finally found the first hardware device that Snow Leopard breaks: The HP LaserJet P1005 printer. Using Bonjour on an AirPort express on two separate machines the same cryptic "Error:-9672" error message. Apparently others are having a similar problem

So far this, not being able to play Matroska video files reliably and some weird font smoothing have been the only problems for me with the Snow Leopard system software. Still it means I'll have to walk to uni to print stuff. As an early adopter I deserve this of course.

#Anime Saki 01 and mahjong nostalgia!

Anime

She accidentally washed her hair with the red bows in the wash.

One thing I never do is log on to my university's network and access people's public shared folders. It just doesn't happen. When I don't access people's public shared folders I also don't get new shows to watch. One such series I didn't get was Saki, a show I'd read about that's all about a mahjong club and the shenanigans of its members.

What can I say, I was instantly drawn (if you'll pardon the anime medium pun) to the premise, I played mahjong when I was growing up (albeit the simplified Singapore Expat version) and absolutely loved it. There's obviously an element of chance, but I found it really fun and interesting because you're thinking and planning ahead as well as during your immediate turn, and like poker you also spend much of your time trying to read your opponents. I learned to read Chinese numerical characters from playing it, even if I can't draw them!

Gonzo included this zettai ryouiki imagery to advance the plot.

What I hadn't anticipated though was the anime adaptation of the Saki manga would be picked up by… Gonzo. For those who don't know, Gonzo are somewhat infamous for their style of art and the types of shows they produce (and have recently been in financial difficulties). They were the animation company behind Rosario+Vampire's bats and also Strike Witches, another show that I thought had a really brilliant premise and story set in an alternative World War II era but I just couldn't bring myself to watch more than a few episodes!

I gulped thinking Saki might suffer the same problem as having a brilliant premise but be let down by such stuff, and while having watched the first episode I did notice the level of blatant fanservice was much higher than shows I would usually dignify my time with, it was nowhere near as extreme as SW. Then again I don't think anything other than unabashed ecchi titles could be as blatant as SW!

Wow Saki, you’re so… useful!

The story centres around Miyanaga Saki who has a knack for mahjong and in particular the uncanny ability to intentionally lose with a perfect +-0 score, a result of "diplomatically" playing it for so many years with her family. She's forced to attend a mahjong club meeting by her friend Suga Kyoutarou who used her to get a girls meal in the canteen because it looked tastier, ha! Wait, they have separate meals?

Then there's Haramura Nodoka who Saki sees walking past at the beginning. Saki thinks she's beautiful, and it turns out she's in the club too. I'm assuming she plays mahjong to distract her from the severely painful back problems she must have with breasts that are so large they must impede her breathing! Well, I guess it is Gonzo.

Sugooooooooi!

Finally there's Takei Hisa, the super sophisticated clubs leader and a member of probably an overly powerful student council (as it tends to go), Saki's friend Someya Mako who wears glasses so therefore must be smart and Kataoka Yuki the cheerful comedy relief.

And they play mahjong. East wind! Build the walls!

Don’t worry about me… I spiked the tea.

I'm not sure whether I'll watch all of it, and if I do I'm not sure whether I'll post much about it given I have so much work and studying to do and waste enough time talking about anime and nonsense as it is, but I'm keeping an open mind and am hoping to be surprised. It's about mahjong and I used to be great at it, come on!

Farewell to The Overnightscape

It's official folks, after pioneering the concept of a downloadable radio show before the term podcast even existed and producing shows for longer than anybody else I can see, Frank Edward Nora's The Overnightscape and The Rampler* programmes have been indefinitely suspended.

I want to do a proper tribute show on the Rubenerd Show to Frank and his incredible efforts spanning most of this decade, but I'm still having severe troubles with feedback with my crappy audio setup here since I came back to Adelaide and I want to do it right, so it'll have to wait.

In the meantime I want to wish Frank all the best in his *new Rampler endeavours at the WFMU radio station and The Overnightscape Underground. Frank is the most engaging and intensely fascinating individual I've ever heard speak, and I'm looking forward to hearing him on his new projects.
