SingTel Huawei E180 on Snow Leopard

Network preference pane with Huawei E180 hardware

Having just come back to Singapore I tried to use my Huawei E180 dongle to connect to SingTel's mobile broadband, but it completely failed in Snow Leopard. Fortunately there's a simple enough fix.

The problem stems from the default Broadband on Mobile application bundled on the virtual CD: when I attempted to connect in Snow Leopard I got a "Failed to find the device" error. Kim Hoong had a great blog post about the problem with an E170 which generated a lot of comments from Singaporeans with similar hardware problems, but these steps worked for me.

Huawei E180 hardware error message on Snow Leopard

First, unplug the modem and if you installed the client software delete the following files:

/Applications/Broadband on Mobile.app/Library/Modem Scripts/HUAWEI*
/System/Library/Extensions/Huawei*

Restart.

Second, go to this excellent MacTalk Australia howto page and download their MobilePartner.mpkg package about halfway down. Install it.

Restart again.

Third, plug in the E180 modem again. You'll be prompted if you want to install new network hardware, and if you choose yes the Network System Preferences pane will open. Click the first HUAWEI Mobile connection which has been created and enter *99# as the telephone number.

Connect, and budda boom! All done!

Here's hoping for their own sake SingTel Mobile get their act together and help people who call them about this issue. Macs are still a minority but especially amongst students here they're rapidly increasing market share.

DéLonghi Magnifica loud noises fixed!

The DéLonghi Magnifica

I've been so busy catching up and doing fun stuff on my trip back to Singapore I haven't blogged as much in the last few days, though given my overarching verbosity you probably all think that's a good thing :). In this post I regale you not with a tale of software or technology but with a coffee machine brought back from the dead!

Okay so it turns out it wasn't really dead after all, but when our DéLonghi Magnifica one touch espresso machine started making loud rattling noises whenever I tried to brew a cup, it sounded like there was a gunfight erupting in our kitchen, a severe problem when one considers Singapore's tough gun laws.

When the shock of not being able to brew a cuppa subsided my dad and I took the malfunctioning device to the Kenwood service centre in the Centro Bianco Building. Kenwood are the official servicing mob for DéLonghi hardware in Singapore, makes perfect sense, right?

I made the silly observation that in Adelaide Bianco is the name of a construction equipment supplier, in Singapore it's where you go to get your coffee machines and kitchen appliances fixed. Heh heh ^_^.

After presenting the loud unit over to the technician he proceeded to test it by pouring some beans in, topping up the water and brewing a cup, with the same loud rattling sounds. Rather than doing what I did and hurriedly pressing the off switch because I was worried the unit was damaging itself, he let it run and started brewing a second cup. The noises slowly disintegrated (I could have thought of a better word to put there) and coffee started coming out again!

Turns out the loud grinding rattling sounds were to do with air being trapped in the water pump, and when enough water had been forced through it started working again. Too easy!

Random iPhone photos from Singapore

Media

Evidently first thing in the morning is a good time to park on Orchard Road!

Since coming back to Singapore I've been packing in a lot of errands, exploring and walking around so I haven't been blogging so much obviously. You can't leave this city for more than a few months without so much changing that you become completely disoriented!

Anyway in case you haven't been following me on Twitter, TwitPic or Gowalla, here are some crappy iPhone shots I took. When it's a weekday and less busy I'll be taking my Nikon D60 out again :).

I admit it, one of the main reasons why I look forward to the holiday season is Starbucks Toffee Nut Lattes. And I got a comfy chair :D I admit it, one of the main reasons why I look forward to the holiday season is Starbucks Toffee Nut Lattes. And I got a comfy chair :D
Leaving the Tanglin Mall Starbucks I wasn't watching where I was going and almost walked into these Christmas decoration thingys. They scared the bejeebus out of me! The decorations along Tanglin Road are definitely more subdued than the usual flamboyant ones from previous years. Economic downturn played a role probably. Bing wasn’t the page you wanted

Internet

Damn straight Chanandler Bing, I didn't want that page I wanted Google! Wonder if any data got Sidekicked?

To be fair Gmail was out again a few months ago too, so it's just further proof that all this reliance on cloud computing whatnot is a problem.

Ultra fancy new Planitonearth maps

Travel

I spent most of today frantically packing, paying bills and buying salami for my dad for my trip back home to The Singapores, but I figured I could spare a bit of time to show you the incredibly sophisticated WebJet map my online flight booking provided. I suppose when I read the awe inspired description with a fancy service name to boot I was expecting something a little more… fancy? :)

Hi Ruben
Thank you for making this reservation with Webjet.

New! See your booking plotted for free with Planitonearth. Simply follow the link below and it is all done for you.

Not to knit pick or anything either, but wouldn't the route path be slightly curved to given we're flying over a rough sphere shape not a flat plane? Hah, get it? Flat plane? Flying? Plane? Hey, I thought it was funny.

I'm flying Qantas instead of Singapore Airlines which is a real bummer, but the price difference has really ballooned even in the last six months. See you on the other side!

Yay, December! November is over!

Thoughts

As I sit here in the dark late this evening playing some Michael Franks holiday music and drinking a frosty glass of water, I'm reminded of late October when I said November was going to be terrible and it couldn't end soon enough. Well it's ended, and I'm so relieved I'm giddy :).

Leaving aside family problems, this full time semester has been rough (relatively speaking of course!). After taking a leave of absence to look after my mum in her last few years and my subsequent studies part time, I'm far behind most people of my age. Heck, virtually everyone who started studying at the same time I did have already graduated or begun Masters degrees.

I'm not sure whether those two factors had anything to do with it, and certainly the material I was studying wasn't overly more difficult than what I'd done before, but this semester was hard. I worried about things that I didn't think were worrying at all before. I felt as though I was going backwards.

Anyway the exams are over, the assignments have been handed in and on Thursday night I'll be back in Singapore for the first part of the holidays. I like Adelaide, but at the moment my mind associates it with… studying. And having Christmas in Munich and New Year in Paris is going to be amazing.

I whinge about workload, aforementioned family problems and a rather pathetic 23 year old midlife crisis, but I am a friggen lucky guy. I guess its easier to think that after the major hurdles have been jumped over instead of when you're staring at them.

Tony Abbott, Liberal Party self destructing

Thoughts

It just goes from worse to even worse for these guys. The Liberal Party in Australia has a new ultra conservative leader, has moved even further to the far-right and is self destructing. And darn NoScript blocking Flash in a humorous way on their website.

I know close to 90% of the people who read my blog here aren't from Australia so I'll try to accommodate. The current [in theory] centre-left Australian Labor Party headed by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd introduced a bill to be debated and passed called the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) which [in theory] would introduce a similar system that some European countries have in place that [in theory] provides incentives for heavily polluting industries to become more efficient. It doesn't go anywhere near far enough to deal with climate change, but at least after 10 years of Liberal party John Howard government (aka: George W. Bush's Sheriff) there's actual discussion about this issue.

The Malcolm Turnbull

Malcolm Turnbull was, up until this morning, the Liberal leader and the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. While still being fiscally conservative he seemed far more socially progressive than others in his party and was even a member of the Australian Republican movement that aims to sever Australia's ties to the British Crown which is unprecedented for someone from that party. I wouldn't have voted for him, but it was nice to have an opposition leader I could actually respect.

Anyway his leadership seemed to be tenuous from the start, but when he wanted to vote for the ETS some climate change denialists/sceptics in the party got their knickers in a knot and figured it was the last straw, so the started resining en masse. Leaving all the dry, boring, childish antics that proceeded out, this morning there was a successful challenge and Tony Abbott is in control.

In other words, Turnbull lost his job over wanting action on climate change on the eve of the Copenhagen summit. Ominous.

Congratulations call from Sarah Palin in order?

Tony Abbott seems more like an imported politician from the GOP than an Aussie, even by American standards he's socially conservative which is saying something! He's completely out of touch with the overwhelming consensus of the Australian public on religion, abortion/womens rights and the environment. Rupert Murdoch (all us Aussies apologise for him, we really do!) and Sarah Palin would like him, probably.

Because I'm an evil red commie bastard I'm a voter for the Australian Greens party which may be appealing socially for the progressives the Liberal Party has now so brutally thrown out, but they'd sooner vote for Labor and the trade unions than vote for the Greens on economic policy! It's a shame they don't have the Australian Democrats to vote for any more; it seems as though Don Chipp left the Liberals and formed that party in the 1980s for similar reasons to what the party is facing now. Could they have a resurgence, maybe? Doubtful, but it could happen.

Conspiracy theory time

Two words: Peter Costello. He's responsible! He'll wait for the party to fall apart, then he'll come swooping back in. He's certainly savaged Turnbull.

Twitter is the newsroom!

I'll be heading back to Singapore for the Christmas holidays and will be leaving all this stuff behind, though I'll probably still see a lot on Twitter. It's interesting that while North America and Europe sleeps, Australia is basically the only sizeable English speaking population awake on Twitter, so we define the trending topics. I expect to see a lot more Abbott and Turnbull before the year is out.
