Enlightenment E17 at 1.0!

Software

Be still my beating heart. Enlightenment E17 is at 1.0.

Finally after a long time coming, we are pleased to announce the 1.0 release of the core [Enlightenment Foundation Libraries] (With the exception of Eet at 1.4).

In my opinion, Enlightenment is the most beautiful window manager for *nix systems, hands down. Long before Compiz and KDE4, Enlightenment squeezed out some pretty darn impressive graphics out of modest hardware.

In the bad old days, I moved from it to Xfce purely because I used mostly GTK+ apps and wanted visual consistency. Always had a soft spot for Enlightenment though, think it'll be getting an install again :).

I knew there was a reason Esther was awesome

Media

Esther Golton

The illustrious, talented and super friendly Esther Golton in Alaska. Independent singer songwriter, hammer dulcimer player and flutist. Floutist? Fluteist? Flautist? Ah okay, the spell checker liked that last one.

I have Unfinished Houses and Aurora Borealis: A Conversation with Alaska's Northern Lights, signed and everything! ^______^ When was the last time you got that from a commercial, mainstream artist I ask you right now?!

#Anime Which is a better Firefox mascot?

Anime

Firefox-tan and Konatan

Another long day of doing stuff and not much time for blogging, so instead of regaling you with a tale of yet another new Firefox extension, I thought I'd do something entirely pointless and compare two of the Firefox mascots.

Who do you think does a better job, Firefox-tan herself, or Konata as Konatan? Firefox-tan has the advantage that she already is the de facto Firefox mascot in the hopelessly otaku world, but Konata from Lucky Star cosplaying as the Firefox icon is simply too funny!

In other news, I tried Firefox 4.0 Beta 10 this afternoon. Broke a whole bunch of my plugins, but certainly looks slick. Question is, can it woo back some of the nerds who moved to Chrome?

The Anodized Behemoth

Media

Whenever I install a new hard drive, pointless ritual dictates I must give it a new custom icon. Not being artistically inclined (as evidenced by the site you're viewing), I often lend myself the use of the fruits of other artists' labours. That was an entirely pointless sentence, as was this one. You know what, forget this whole blasted paragraph. It never happened.

On the left is the default Mac Pro icon in OS X, the right was drawn by Parthiban Mohanraj entitled The Anodized Behemoth over at DeviantArt. Apple should hire him for all the icons in 10.7 Lion. Given their less than attractive new iTunes icon, they desperately need him.

Ayn Rand in a nutshell

Thoughts

Icon from the Tango Desktop projectThis is the greatest thing I've read in a long time.

Critics of Social Security and Medicare frequently invoke the words and ideals of author and philosopher Ayn Rand, one of the fiercest critics of federal insurance programs. But a little-known fact is that Ayn Rand herself collected Social Security. She may also have received Medicare benefits.

The Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights also has a page on their website entitled Social Security is Immoral. Me thinks we'll be seeing a revision soon to include an exception clause. Sounds like if Santa was a programmer. Bad joke, sorry.
