Yahoo still doesn’t get it

Internet

Carol Bartz outlining their priorities for Yahoo Mail in an interview with the Wall Street Journal online blog thingy:

The company is really enthused by the increase in engagement by people who are using its Yahoo Mail Beta, which is much faster than the original and incorporates things like social networking

Instead of adding social networking to email (which Google Buzz and Wave proved people don't want), I wish they spent their time implementing the option for HTTPS. Gmail uses it by default and even Live Mail offers it… in some places, some of the time.

I've had a similar experience to Steve Gibson, when I've tested Firesheep in cafes, unsecured Yahoo Mail accounts are by and away the most prevalent. Yahoo especially owes their paid customers some sorely needed action on this; John and Jane Doe won't fire up a VPN just to check their email in a public place, nor should they be expected to. I do, but I'm a tin-foil-hat nerd.

Dropping some sanity… into a box

Internet

Icon from the Tango Desktop projectI don't understand the increasingly negative attitudes people are having towards services like Dropbox. People who don't encrypt their personal files before sending them off to a public, shared server clearly want their data to be read in the clear, so who cares?

Yes, I'm being a little tongue in cheek ;). While I lament the fact some people are so blasé and loose with their data, the fact Dropbox doesn't automatically encrypt files for their users is a bit worrying. We've also known for a couple of weeks that allegedly their login system leaves a lot to be desired, but then again if you personally encrypted your data before uploading, you'd be fine anyway.

All cloud services have potential, you just have to be smart in the way you use them and recognise their weaknesses.

MacVim.app comes with console Vim!

Software

Shortly after posting my entry about building Vim from source because Homebrew preferred I install MacVim or use OS X's outdated version instead, Ibid commented that MacVim hides regular Vim inside its application bundle. A quick check confirms that it does! This is why I blog, to learn stuff from awesome people :).

My dad asked me once why I was typing “is”

For those who have installed it from the binary disk image:

% ls /Applications/MacVim.app/Contents/MacOS
MacVim* vim*

And from Homebrew, presuming you haven't symlinked it yet (reconstruct onto one line, ls doesn't like multi-line backslash!):

% ls $HOMEBREW_PATH/macvim/[version]
     /MacVim.app/Contents/MacOS
MacVim* vim*

MacVim is the the Cocoa version of Vim we've come to love, and Vim is indeed regular Vim!

Chrome has longer version numbers

At the time of writing, obviously this version of Vim lags a little behind what you'd get from building the source yourself (7.3.107 versus 7.3.108), but that's certainly far newer than the 7.2.x tree we're still on with Snow Leopard by default.

Unlike gvim builds of Vim which can just be called without the -gtk flag to render a regular emulator in the shell, MacVim is thoroughly a Cocoa application, so I presumed launching vanilla Vim wasn't possible. Building from source will give me the latest version, but I'm tempted just to use MacVim's version from now on, if only so then I have one less Vim floating around my system which I otherwise keep meticulously tidy!

Ben Sidran’s Cool Paradise, track 11

Media

Ben Sidram's Cool ParadiseIn this final entry in our series of fascinating lyrical anecdotes derived from Ben Sidran’s 1990 album Cool Paradise, Ben leaves us with his impression of what it’s been like to weather critics and be featured on Rubenerd.com, in the song Searching For a Girl Like You:

Folks say I shouldn’t care,
I got to be right there!

By "right there" I’m assuming Rubenerd.com, in which case… hell yeah! :D

That concludes this out-of-context lyrics post series of utter pointless fun. But don’t fret, you can still read them all in their entirety in the archives where forever they’ll belong, into eternity, or at least until I stop paying my webhosting bills. Goodnight everyone! Peace out!

After 6 years, Rubenerd Purple is back!

Internet

For those of you lucky enough to not have to ever see my horrible blog design give read the RSS feed (or RDF… really?), you may not have noticed the sudden change to purple a few days ago! Purpleness!

I'll admit it, purple has secretly been my favourite colour since I got my hands on some Sun hardware when I was a kid, though in primary school I was informed by a well meaning teacher that perhaps I shouldn't make that fact well known for its… shall we say, social implications. Now I'm older and simply don't care what people think about my appearance or tastes, so I figure if Andrew Cox can admit to it being his favourite colour, I can too!

I'm still working on getting the schade (sorry, bad pun) right, but for the time being let me know what you think :). Merry Nightmare, Senjoughara Hitagi and Hotaru/Sailor Saturn would approve!
