My Australian Bureau of Statistics infographic
Thoughts
From the ABS Spotlight website. With a few exceptions, on the whole I find infographics to be all fluff and little substance, but this was fun!
If you go to the page, run with NoScript enabled or Flash disabled to access the faster HTML version. Don’t go to the root address, or you’ll be one of the 100% of people who’ll be given an Apache error!

I wanted to include a Norwegian photo here as a sign of solidarity, though all I had was this photo I took outside the Norwegian sandwich bar in Damansara, Malaysia. Take that Andrew Bolt.
Peace <3.
Warn of Murdoch in Firefox and Chrome
Internet
Never before have I installed an extension so quickly! For Firefox and for Chrome.
For those who haven't been watching this narrative unfold since the mid 20th Century, Rupert Murdoch is an Australian/American media mogul who's far reaching worldwide holdings include the very best in unbiased, factual, journalistic endeavours. Still, if you want to spare yourself the delight of reading such wonderful material, here's how you do it.
For Firefox
From the Mozilla Add-Ons page:
MurdochAlert show a warning bar on Murdoch Family-controlled websites. This alerts users to the potential computer security risks of accessing Murdoch-controlled sites. Handy also for identifying the news sources controlled by the Murdoch Family.
I installed the extension, and sure enough I was presented with a warning when going to The Australian and to Fox News. Which is a relief, because I wouldn't want people to know I've been to such sites. Or Andrew Bolt… but that's another topic entirely.

Firefox-tan is happy ^_^.
For Chrome
I don't use Chrome or Chromium other than for testing, but it didn't take long for an extension in a similar spirit to MurdochAlert to be issued for it, in the form of Murdoch Block.
What does this app do?
- Blocks websites owned and operated by Newscorp
Which websites are blocked?
How is a site blocked?
- The default list is only news and publication sites but that can be customized on the options page.
- When the user opens a blocked site, a warning is displayed and the user is given an option to continue to the site.
Granted MurdochAlert has a more urgent sounding name that successfully conjurers up images of warning sirens, but I give kudos to these people for coming up with a term that rhymes.
Replaced with apps from the iTunes library?
Software
If this error message pops up for you, right click your iDevice in the left iTunes column, click Transfer Purchases, then try syncing again. Learned that after running around several circles today!
I tell you what, the iTelephone made syncing a smartphone/PDA with the Mac easy again since the late Palm lost interest, but it's still far from perfect.
#Anime Mahou Shoujo Azusa Magica
Anime
When I came across the above graphic on Pixiv and chuckled to myself in the same way I chuckled about the Bakemonogatari crossover, I had no idea that Asusa as Madoka was a meme! I'm a lousy okaku ;)
From Jake's Anime Blog from all the way back in March 2011:
A K-ON!! fanzine has appeared in Akihabara with Nakano Azusa from the anime/manga franchise K-ON! in a role from the anime series Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
And the accompanying photo:

I have to say I'm without a doubt a Mugi fanboy with Yui a close second, but Azusa is terribly cute and fits the roll well, at least from what I've seen so far.
Now I just need to actually finish Madoka Magica, lest someone get angry that I'm posting about a series I haven't watched all the way through yet! I cop enough flack for having figures and wall scrolls for unfinished shows. There just aren't enough hours in the day!
This Week in Rubenerd Mobile Computing
Hardware
It's time for everybody's favourite blog post series, This Week in Rubenerd Mobile Computing! Rolls off the tongue quite nicely, does it not? I'm Ruben Schade, and today's post features Apple's new line of MacBook computers, and a new ThinkPad tablet?
The MacBook
Apple continues their march for global domonation with their sudden drop in price of the MacBook Air, with the stated intention that "Everyone should have a notebook this advanced. And now everyone can.". While the author belives the the term "advanced" is in line with Apple's typical overhyped marketing, the form factor and the inclusion of i5 and i7 CPUs in said form factor is wonderous. The price is also low enough that he can't help but wonder why anyone in their right mind would pay the Microsoft Tax for a crappy plastic netbook in its place now.
More surprising still though is the dropping of the MacBook line altogether. The author always thought the MacBook and the MacBook Pro to be an awkward distinction from the start given they had so many parts in common, were both unibody machines at one point, and that the Pros didn't really have the high end features the real Dell and HP professional workstation laptops had.
The ThinkPad
The erosion of the once mighty bastion of advanced technology, quality and design continues in ernest with the annoucement of a ThinkPad branded tablet running Google's closed source Android Ice Cream Microsoft Long Name Envy Honeycomb operating system. One shouldn't get too emotionally attached to brands, but to see the ThinkPad line with a Lenovo badge was hard enough without seeing one running a Java iOS interface knockoff. Hey, but its open right, so no problem!
The author supposes if one could run MeeGo it would be infinitely more attractive, provided the build quality that the ThinkPad line has earned a reputation for will continue in this tablet form. He will be keeping a close eye on this, for despite having large amounts of Apple hardware and an iPad in the family he feels little desire to own one of the latter.
The End
And that concludes this installment of everybody's favourite blog post series, This Week in Rubenerd Mobile Computing! It was the first, and hopefully, will be the last. I'm Ruben Schade. Goodnight.
