She adores her 64!

Hardware

I’d react the same if I were given a mint Commodore 64 box! I got my 64 (and 16, and Plus 4) second hand on eBay when I was 18, and have loved them. Born too late for the home computer revolution, too early to have the internet in primary school. Never used datasettes, but had 5.25″ floppies. Feeling sorry for me yet?

Happy New Year!

My first 2013 post, my first K-On! post of 2013, the first post from my adorable new 11″ MacBook Air, and the first 2013 K-On! post from my adorable new 11″ MacBook Air!

The image on the left is by おまる@3日目西“け”23b on Pixiv, the image on the left is the video I took of the Sydney fireworks from my iTelephone 4 in the company of some wonderful friends, and especially Clara ^_^.

Peace, health, sillyness and happiness for the new year to you all.

❄ Yuletide 2012

Thoughts

Clara ^_^

For the first couple of years since we lost mummy on Yule Eve-Eve, the 25th of December was a pretty sombre affair. Last year was bittersweet.

This year, for the first time, I felt as though Yuletide joy was with us again. My dad, sister and I sat around and exchanged presents to an awful vinyl record of 1980s pop stars butchering holiday classics, then had a nice late breakfast (Schade family savoury French Toast!); talked and joked for hours about life, the universe and everything; played some traditional Nintento Wii bowling; and chowed down on an amazing home cooked turkey dinner made in the way only my parents know how.

Along with a can of original, imported Irn-Bru and a registration code for OmniFocus (YES!), my sister and old man also bought me a MacBook Air which should be arriving on the 31st. Speechless!

A few days prior, over some coffee, tea and cuddles at a lovely French cafe in Sydney, my beautiful girlfriend Clara gave me some of the most thoughtful presents ever. She is responsible for practically my entire nendoroid collection at this stage, and to have one of Nagato Yuki from the enduring Suzumiya Haruhi franchise is particularly apt ^^. I'd argue she's cuter than Yuki though.

Above all else though, as with my family on the day itself, the best present I could have ever wished for was her company. I hope to share in that with her for many years to come :'). Happy belated holidays!

Gangnam YouTube Style

Media

PSY on YouTube

Congrats to PSY for his 1 billionth view! I suspect a large number of those are people watching the video more than once, but that in and of itself is also epic. Oppa!

I loved Gangnam Style when I first watched it back in August, and when I saw PSY perform live in Sydney in October, and I still love it now. If you hate it, have fun with that.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to perform some pelvic thrusts in a lift. Or wear a neon yellow suit and large sunglasses. I haven't decided yet.

CentOS onigiri, by @hanezawakirika

Software

And now for something, completely different.

kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10

Software

If you're seeing the above error, chances are you haven't got enough memory!

While attempting to install from CentOS-6.3-i386-minimal.iso, both VirtualBox and Parallels Desktop independently produced this error, regardless of the type of installation chosen. I suspect given this mailing list thread, this is due to a bug in the Anaconda installer not being able to use swap space.

Increasing the allocated virtual memory from 128MiB (which I'd chosen to match a VPS) to 192MiB replaced the above errors with an insufficient RAM error message, which was far more useful.

512MiB solved the problem. Boom!

A Mayan end of the world rant!

Thoughts

Every generation has their prophets predicting nonsense. Some seem hell-bent on making such predictions self-fulfilling, but that's another story. For a successful nonsense prediction, these are the steps one must follow.

  1. Search for a weakness in the general populace.
  2. Exploit it.
  3. Set a date. A time is even better, makes you look more legit, and stuff.
  4. When it doesn’t happen, turn your defeat around into proof.
  5. Accuse the sceptics of being closed minded.

In the case of the tired world-coming-to-an-end meme, these steps go as follows.

  1. People are afraid of death, and leaving dreams unfulfilled.
  2. The world is coming to an end!
  3. The Mayans [maybe] said 21st of December
  4. How do you know the world didn’t end, and we’ve been transported to another dimensional plane, or we’re in hell now and the world will suddenly get worse?
  5. How can you be certain this didn’t happen? Wow, how closed minded are you!?

I'm [almost!] surprised by how many people are convinced by this fatuous line of reasoning. Not only is it intellectually dishonest, it renders the entire prediction moot. The world could have ended as you were reading this post! YAAARGH!!! Open-ended vagueness that relies on loose definitions of terms (and facts) can make any prediction true, that's how horoscopes "work".

Here, I'll try one now. I predict that in the next two hours, you will have been tricked by a certain character plot twist on Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu. You weren't? Well how do you know you weren't watching it, and have already forgotten, or your brain was wiped by an alien? BOOM!

And while we all had fun with it, consider this. How many people thought this was true? How many do you think actually sold their houses and fled to the hills, and are now royally screwed? Probably more than either of us can appreciate. Such is the social cost of pseudoscience and superstition.

Fortunately, we can rest assured that no organisations are built on this. HAHAHAH!!! Hahaha! Haha. Hah.

Minor site tweaks of doom

Internet

Netscape Navigator!

Taking a quick break from writing a development proposal, I made some minor tweaks on the site today. On the site? To the site?

  • The layout is now centred, not to the left. I preferred it the old way, but the number of tweets and emails from well meaning people asking me if my CSS was broken got to be too much. Actually, I did this a few days ago.

  • Lines from the header have been removed.

  • After two years of CSS3 rounded corners, I’ve got rid of those too. They looked okay, but they were inconsistent with the rest of the design. Or at least, I thought so.

I've also done some other CSS tweaks in preparation for the unveiling of something much bigger soon. Or should I say, someone much bigger. And no, it's not Netscape Navigator Gold 2.02 support.

Podcasts Ruben listens to, December 2012

Media

I've been an fanatical consumer of podcasts since 2004, in the iPodder days. While I do sync the odd song, I overwhelmingly listen to podcasts more than anything else. Television, radio, what are those? About the only thing I listen to/watch now that isn't a podcast is anime.

With the ending of two of my favourite shows, I decided to get in and post this inaugural Podcasts Ruben Listens To post while I still can. I'm going to miss seeing that reassuring Build and Analyse and Hypercritical cover art on my iTelephone as I walk back from the train station.
