Summer Night: Live with the Chick Corea Akoustic Band

Finally, I had the time today to create a new article for my beloved WikiProject Jazz group on Wikipedia.

Summer Night: Live is a live jazz album by the Chick Corea Akoustic Band trio, featuring Chick Corea, John Patitucci and Dave Weckl. Recorded during a concert in Belgrade in 1987, it was released with Jazz Door, the former recorded and live jazz record label.

The set contained jazz standards from Miles Davis and John Coltrane, as well as several original quartets by Corea.

I could see why Wikipedians had skipped this particular album in Chick's discography; information about it online is scant. I was just lucky that we had the physical album here to reference! Oh yeah, and the music is friggen good too.

我爱你 Clara ♡

Clara~

Forgive me for this post, I haven't written anything like this before!

So I was stressed from assignments. The subjects I have this semester combined have more workload than I had when I was working full time in a corporate office. I'd say almost double, as a conservative estimate. You can tell from the sudden drop off in the frequency of blog posts here!

Clara saw that I was stressed out, so she drew me Yuki and emailed it to me. A few days ago, she gave me the original in a little wooden frame to keep. She's sewn me plushie whales, snow bunnies and birds. She's held my hand, squeezed my arm and given me hugs. She's pretended to find my jokes hilarious! She's written me letters, typed me emails, and commuted from Hornsby to Bardwell Park to see me. She's shared udon with me, and long evening walks. She's gentle with me, loves me and respects me, no strings attached. At times, I wake up and can't believe it.

I can tell she's stressed now too, so I'm posting this here to say what a wonderful, talented, creative, smart, generous, considerate, cute, beautiful person she is. Regardless of whether she believes me or not, I'm the luckiest guy in the world.

I'm so excited to be spending my future with you, Clara. I love you.

Alpha Centauri Bb

The discovery of an Earth-sized planet (artist's impression pictured) in Alpha Centauri, the star system closest to Earth, is announced.

News from Wikipedia. I still get a giddy thrill from news like this, just like I did when I was a kid. To boldly go~

Happy Birthday Mummy

Happy Birthday Mummy~

She'd be 57 today. Fortunately, I had a suitably embarrassing photo from her birthday celebration in 2005 to share with all of you. Good thing she's not around or I'd receive a P.G. Wodehouse book to the face!

What I wouldn't give to celebrate this day with you again. I love you ♡

This year's #CityRail tunnel adventure

With all the chaos on CityRail today, this incident seems almost quaint. Still, wrote it up last night, so may as well release!

So I was making my way home from a particularly wonderful date, and was still feeling rather giddy. As I made my way to Town Hall station, I joked to myself that even a broken down train couldn't dampen my spirits. It seems I was overheard ;).

After waiting the usual amount of time on Platform 6 for our Airport and East Hills Line Revesby service, we boarded the tin can S-series strain at Town Hall, and proceeded around the City Circle without incident. Admittedly the carriage I was sitting in seemed a little louder and rattlier than usual, but it didn't bother me.

It was when we arrived at Central that we got the first inkling that something was wrong. While frantically tweeting before being plunged into the Airport Line tunnel (which has barely enough usable phone reception to send a text message let alone use data) our driver informed us that "the train has malfunctioning doors, and to please stand clear of them".

Malfunctioning doors, huh?

As we proceeded into their Airport Line tunnel, it became clear something was amiss. From my vantage point on the second level I couldn't visually make out what was going on, but I started hearing loud swearing, followed by even louder rattling sounds. That bone chilling metal-on-metal grinding sound... and it was only getting louder.

It wasn't long before the lights in our carriage started to flicker and go out, causing me great inconvenience as I sat there attempting to read my eInk Kindle! Around that time we started to decelerate, and eventually came to a stop inside the tunnel between Central and Green Square.

After a few minutes of sitting there doing nothing, people in my carriage started worrying and discussing what was going on. The driver came on the PA and informed us there was a door malfunction, and that he'd let us know what was going on shortly. An engineer in a CityRail uniform walked past us in the carriage and back down the stairs, obviously to see what was going on.

Fifteen odd minutes past, and the train jerked into motion again, the way only the older R/S series trainsets can without their chopper control! We didn't seem to be going as fast as usual though, meaning our trip to Green Square seemed to take far longer than usual. When we arrived, we sat there for another few minutes, before being told the last two carriages in our train were being shut down and locked, and that we'd have to move down one!

We huddled in this carriage, now clearly full to capacity with these extra people, and stared through the window into the one we'd just left. It looked eerie through the darkness of the tunnel; the lights kept flickering and the malfunctioning doors kept shaking around and causing all sorts of noise. It was downright creepy!

The train limped along the Airport Line up to Wolli Creek, then connected to the East Hills line for the final leg home. I was dearly fortunate enough that the carriage was finally deemed unsafe when we arrived at my station; shortly after I got off everyone was told to, and wait for the next one! It was the biggest crowd I'd ever seen at our sleepy little Bardwell Park station!

The last time I was stuck in the Airport Line tunnel for an extended period of time was in November 2011. At least an hour to get home was less than the three hours I went through back then, I suppose!

Will be uploading the rest of the photos from our trip soon, promise!

The NASA #Curiosity rover arrived!

Posted last today, so it would appear as the first post on my site for a while :)

Live from bed

It was a warm early morning in Sydney when I stayed up late to watch the launch of NASA's Curiosity rover. Staring into my iTelephone screen in the pitch blackness of my bedroom, I watched in awe and child-like excitement seeing the rocket blast off into the sky. From the original post:

Whereas during STS-135 I watched with baited breath on my MacBook Pro, this time I elected to witness the event on my iTelephone, which the NASA site accommodated with an iOS link next to the primary video feed.

Despite being roughly half a minute behind the live picture during the feed, I got a quiet, giddy thrill from watching the launch in a darkened room, from my bed, with my iTelephone in hand. For the first time in ages, I felt like I was living in the future.

Now here we are six months later and...

We have photos!

From the NASA site:

This [image shown at the top of this post] is one of the first images taken by NASA's Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars on the morning of Aug. 6, 2012. It was taken through a fisheye wide-angle lens on the left "eye" of a stereo pair of Hazard-Avoidance cameras on the left-rear side of the rover.

The logistics of launching such a massive vehicle into the sky, sending it millions of kilometres, have it land safely with a hovering sky tethering system, rebroadcasting images and commands via a satellite previously launched and placed into orbit around the Martian planet... so this guy can include this image on his weblog. Well, among other uses, but you get the drift. There's a pun about Martian dust storms there somewhere.

The preciousness of those pixels. Once again, I'm at a loss for words.

Science is beautiful.

Singapore posts on hold

Singapore flag

Given I only have a limited amount of time back home, I've been attempting to cram as much stuff into each day as I can! My limited funds means I've also abstained from any cabs, and taken the MRT. It's fast, cheap and clean, but sometimes takes a little longer than a taxi would ;D

Upshot of this: I'm too tired each evening to write up a post, and publish all my SLR shots. I'll do this when I get back to Sydney.

Cheers!

Bashar al-Assad, Julian Assange

Patrick Wintour reporting for The Guardian:

Britain and America are willing to offer the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, safe passage – and even clemency – as part of a diplomatic push to convene a UN-sponsored conference in Geneva on political transition in Syria.

And yet Julian Assange, who has not been charged or convicted of any crimes, is asking Equador to protect him from Britain and America. This whole farce would be hilarious if it weren't so tragic.
