Started in December 2010 to denote shorter entries that don’t need a Read More link. Not to be confused with the apparel which I don’t look terribly good wearing.

1,024 Folding@Home work units!

Icon from the Tango Desktop Project At %2011-05-01 04:13:04% Pacific US time, computers in the Schade family passed the 1,024 work unit mark on the Folding@Home protein folding project, with a current score of 337,848 and a rank of 33,008 of 1,543,174, or 2.13%. If work units were bytes, we'd be up to 1 kilobyte right now, that's some pretty sweet sugar right there ^^. Brown sugar of course, it's much nicer.

When I pass 2.00%, I'm going formally ask again if I can have my account changed from rubenerd to ForDebraSchade or something similar. You're not supposed to be able to, but I hope they'll grant an exception.

Even their hair is kinda the same!

Not making any kind of political statement, but do Hafez al-Assad and Joe Scarborough kinda look alike, or is that just me? Was just browsing Wikipedia this afternoon when it struck me!

Joe and I need to grow moustaches. For me, so I don't keep getting confused as a 16 year old. My spindly build is the result of occupational hazards, thank you very much!

The Great Money Caper

Marge: Why are you frosting that old throw pillow?
Homer: I... could ask you the very same question!

Yahoo still doesn't get it

Carol Bartz outlining their priorities for Yahoo Mail in an interview with the Wall Street Journal online blog thingy:

The company is really enthused by the increase in engagement by people who are using its Yahoo Mail Beta, which is much faster than the original and incorporates things like social networking

Instead of adding social networking to email (which Google Buzz and Wave proved people don't want), I wish they spent their time implementing the option for HTTPS. Gmail uses it by default and even Live Mail offers it... in some places, some of the time.

I've had a similar experience to Steve Gibson, when I've tested Firesheep in cafes, unsecured Yahoo Mail accounts are by and away the most prevalent. Yahoo especially owes their paid customers some sorely needed action on this; John and Jane Doe won't fire up a VPN just to check their email in a public place, nor should they be expected to. I do, but I'm a tin-foil-hat nerd.

Dropping some sanity... into a box

Icon from the Tango Desktop projectI don't understand the increasingly negative attitudes people are having towards services like Dropbox. People who don't encrypt their personal files before sending them off to a public, shared server clearly want their data to be read in the clear, so who cares?

Yes, I'm being a little tongue in cheek ;). While I lament the fact some people are so blasé and loose with their data, the fact Dropbox doesn't automatically encrypt files for their users is a bit worrying. We've also known for a couple of weeks that allegedly their login system leaves a lot to be desired, but then again if you personally encrypted your data before uploading, you'd be fine anyway.

All cloud services have potential, you just have to be smart in the way you use them and recognise their weaknesses.

Ben Sidran's Cool Paradise, track 11

Ben Sidram's Cool ParadiseIn this final entry in our series of fascinating lyrical anecdotes derived from Ben Sidran's 1990 album Cool Paradise, Ben leaves us with his impression of what it's been like to weather critics and be featured on Rubenerd.com, in the song Searching For a Girl Like You:

Folks say I shouldn't care,
I got to be right there!

By "right there" I'm assuming Rubenerd.com, in which case... hell yeah! :D

That concludes this out-of-context lyrics post series of utter pointless fun. But don't fret, you can still read them all in their entirety in the archives where forever they'll belong, into eternity, or at least until I stop paying my webhosting bills. Goodnight everyone! Peace out!

After 6 years, Rubénerd Purple is back!

For those of you lucky enough to not have to ever see my horrible blog design give read the RSS feed (or RDF... really?), you may not have noticed the sudden change to purple a few days ago! Purpleness!

I'll admit it, purple has secretly been my favourite colour since I got my hands on some Sun hardware when I was a kid, though in primary school I was informed by a well meaning teacher that perhaps I shouldn't make that fact well known for its... shall we say, social implications. Now I'm older and simply don't care what people think about my appearance or tastes, so I figure if Andrew Cox can admit to it being his favourite colour, I can too!

I'm still working on getting the schade (sorry, bad pun) right, but for the time being let me know what you think :). Merry Nightmare, Senjoughara Hitagi and Hotaru/Sailor Saturn would approve!

Ben Sidran's Cool Paradise, track 10

Ben Sidram's Cool ParadiseIn this penultimate entry in our continuing series of fascinating lyrical anecdotes derived from Ben Sidran's 1990 album Cool Paradise, today Ben tells of his time at our house, in the song Walking With The Blues:

This place...
ain't no disgrace.

It's cold as ice... WATCH OUT!

Aside from that warning to his compatriots regaring our parsimonious usage of expensive central heating, we're flattered! We think. Hey, in 1990 we were still living in Melbourne and at this time of year it would have been pretty chilly! But I digress.

Tomorrow's lyrical anecdote will be the last, so enjoy these while you still can! ^^;

Oh noes, data caps!

Icon from the Tango Desktop Project With ISPs mulling data caps in the United States and Canada, their arguments ring true for us here in Australia too.

Streaming, online gaming, downloads, smartphones/tablets switching over to Wifi mode when they are in range, and of course all of the standard stuff like email/web/IM/etc...

Indeed. This is why automated web backup and online video streaming services are im(practical, possible) for most Australians where data caps are the norm, and where in some cases they're actively encoraged for dubious reasons. Of course the NBN and sorely needed government investment will fix everything!!1!!!one! Right?

In the meantime, Stop The Cap! Not referring to baseball caps, though I don't look good in them anyway.

Hiding categories in WordPress 3.1.1

Starting with WordPress 3.1.1, my previously discussed functions.php method for hiding posts filed in certain categories works again, and the latest workaround with RYO Category Visibility 3.0beta-9 is now broken.

There must have been a bug in WordPress 3.1 that prevented the former from working, which the latter worked around. Perhaps this:

WordPress 3.1.1: [...] Fixes for various query and taxonomy edge cases that caused some plugin compatibility issues
