Trying out the nvi editor

nvi

Having fun with FreeBSD on my Libretto this afternoon, I didn’t have internet access to install Vim from ports so I decided to finally learn more about the bundled nvi editor. I missed syntax highlighting, but if you customise it right it’s still a nice, lightweight, capable editor.

Tcsh telling me DING!

Tcsh saying DING!

As a FreeBSD guy (and even on my Linux boxes) I’ve been using tcsh as my shell for years, but I never noticed this easter egg before. If you have your prompt defined to show the time with %T, at the top of each hour (as my American friends say it) it replaces the time with the word "DING!", how cute!

Chan-andler Bing Ding! Ring a Ding Ding, it’s a new hour! Is it sad that something like this made my day?

Could KDE 4.4 be enough to win me back?

Screenshot of KDE 4.4

While I was quick to point out the release of Apple’s Aperture 3 software, perhaps even bigger news is KDE 4.4 now available. Time to check out openSUSE or Mandriva again soon?

An OpenSSH epiphany

OpenSSH

Today’s epiphany. Kind of embarrassing that I’ve been using OpenSSH for this long without doing this.

SSH with pre-shared keys is simply a pleasure to use. The fact the security is much better is just an added bonus ;)

Is that how you spell Epiphany? Let me go check the Gnome project page :).

Fun with graphical Links browser

IntoYourHeadPodcast.com in Links -g

I love the Links text web browser and have been using it on FreeBSD, Linux and OS X shells, terminals and whatnot for years but I’ve never once felt the need to customise any builds because it Just Works® so gosh darn well. Checking out the variants (-v) for the Links port in MacPorts on a whim I noticed something interesting:

links has the variants:
   universal: Build for multiple architectures
   gcs: Grilled cheese sandwich headers
   x11: Include X11 interface

LilyTerm is my favourite terminal emulator!

I’ve used a lot of terminal emulators over the years trying to find the best one for my needs. Lately I became lazy and just started using the default Gnome and Xfce terminals but as of today I’ve started using LilyTerm and am kicking myself that I didn’t switch sooner.

Fedora 12 installed and go!

Fedora 12 running on a ThinkPad X40

Given I didn’t have any exams today, I took a break from studying for a couple of hours and installed the final release of Fedora 12 that was released yesterday. So far so good, I torrented the i386 DVD image and installed it on my ThinkPad with no problems at all.

Friday night shell adventure

Here’s something to try if you find yourself at home on a Friday night and you want some excitement. For legal purposes, I must state you should not attempt this.

Fedora 11 is almost awesome

Fedora Screenshot #fail

After doing some more experimenting with the unstable release of Debian, I so royally messed up my ThinkPad I decided to wipe it clean and start again! For a change and given 12 is coming in 6 days, I thought I’d try out Fedora. So far I’m impressed. Now if only it could take screenshots and go on standby…!
