Status update and all that

Hi everyone,

We’ll have internet at our new address by early September. Until then, these people write more interesting blogs anyway.

Peace, health, happiness and all that,
Ruben

After the jump… into a BP lake

Ladies and gentlemen there comes a time in a bloggers life where he must take the time to discuss something that may seem trivial at first but is in fact critical to the infrastructure of the net and ultimately to its very survival. I’m talking of course about the phrase "after the jump", hereafter referred to as ATJ to spare you having to read it again.

[Anime] I may be able to restore my blog!

Today was so ridiculously depressing what with stories like this and the fact I couldn’t see Steve Ballmer in Singapore made me think I needed to end today on a high note. I may have uncovered some of my old anime blog posts!

Ms. Guilty Cubicles updates her blog

After several long months without any activity, Ms. Guilty Cubicles has updated her blog with a brand new entry so brilliant in its execution I had to wear sunglasses while reading it. Then I discovered something.

Neal O'Carroll buying me a coffee

Buy Ruben a Coffee link

I was puzzled when Neal O’Carroll insinuated in the comments for a recent post that he’d used the Buy Ruben a Coffee button on my blog sidebar. PayPal didn’t — and still hasn’t — emailed me any record of this taking place.

Anyway I would like to sheepishly admit with a deep crimson face that Neal did indeed hit that Buy Ruben a Coffee button, it just appeared in my PayPal account, and I wanted to thank him for keeping this weirdo caffeine-d up for another day. Thank you good sir :).

The Reinvigorated Programmer by Mike Taylor

Mike Taylor

Longer time readers of my blog here would have read my lamentations about the fall of really high quality personal blogs and the rise of homogeneous, interchangeable blog networks with hundreds of writers, so when I find an amazing personal blog I have to share it!

A 2700 Rubénerd pointless milestone!

A Rubenerd Pointless Milestone

Once upon a time there was a guy who wasn’t terribly exciting or witty, so when something as silly as a nice round even number appeared as his blog post count, he had to tell everyone. In his best Austin Powers voice: post #2700 bay-bee!

Before you complain, at least this post had more substance than my previous post from this evening. Which makes no sense, because that post was chronicling the end of the world; if anything it should have had more detail. I’m going to bed.

Could Melody give WordPress some competition?

For many years now WordPress has been the iPhone of blogging tools: every other platform is judged by how well it compares to it, and unless you have a specific need that isn’t served by it, it gets chosen almost as the default. Here’s hoping this brand new offshoot of Movable Type brings back some solid competition. And I didn’t even make a terrible musical pun in the title, I was tempted though.

2010.03.18 SegPub outages

SegPub outage, 2010.03.18 01.17

This morning’s intermittent Rubénerd outages were brought to you by Segment Publishing. They’re still miles better than Servage was, though that isn’t saying much.

Curiously, many of the outages over the last year have been around this time of day. I wonder if they do server maintenance around 00:00-02:00 Adelaide time, or whether it’s due to increased loads given it’s daylight in the US.

UPDATE: Іt’s now 10:42 and pages are still taking many long minutes to render. Time to move web hosts again?

Don't read this, read Josh Nunn's Geekorium

Every so often you read a blog post by someone that talks about an issue so close to you and using words you would have used that it’s not only spooky, but makes you think there’s a secret evil conspiracy going on. I accuse Josh Nunn of orchestrating such a conspiracy this evening with his latest blog post.
