:( It's terrible how little oversight is inherent in Australian Tertiary Education. Sure, there's plenty of people to complain to but why not just make sure people are doing things the right way in the first place. When there's a lack of common sense and basic human compassion, it removes all legimacy of whatever they think their purpose is (be it research or teaching). Again, specific examples when I graduate >_>

This is brilliant. Just what we need—Fielding inserting his morality into issues on cyber-safety.

Especially when we already know his answer to everything is to censor the Internet.

I went to the store in Elizabeth once and asked for a cable to connect my video camera to my computer via USB, they came back and sold me a cable that when I came home turned out to be firewire :( I took it back and asked for a USB cable instead, they came back and tried to sell me yet another Firewire cable. I said no, they left and tried it once more.

Then they told me there is no USB cable for my camera. Way to go x_x

But I've never had the pleasure of going to the Myers Centre shop, mainly because I usually don't have a need for it >_> but still...

WARNING, TURNS OUT THIS COMMENT HAS NO RELEVANCE.

@Zombie_Plan I wholeheartedly approve :D I'd rock up with one if I had to do a presentation in front of a lot of people just to see the looks on people's faces as I fiddle with dials. "Sorry guys, the PowerPoint will have to wait for a sec...!"

@Joshnunn Heh exactly, I mean 100 combinations! And if you were lazy you could just crack it open and put the unexcrypted chip on a daughterboard.

@Alex Then I sure as heck hope "Staples Promotional Materials" aren't a preferred supplier! As for secure erasing, that's the one issue I'm not as worried about, magnetic media are the ones you want to really securely erase several times before giving it up.

> What’s worrying is I’d wager a nice sushi lunch that if someone like Senator Conroy saw this, he’d buy hundreds of them and use them to carry around sensitive, confidential government data about us. I’m scared, really scared

I hate to tell you this, but that's exactly how USB Flash drives are in government. You can't use your own (might have viruses). You can't even use a new one (might have viruses). But, you can buy a certified clean one from a preferred supplier. Once you have transferred the confidential data from point A to point B, the flash drive is securely destroyed (crushed into a fine dust). I tried to point out that US Dept of Defense Standard 5220.22-M (3 Secure Deletes is enough) has existed forever. *blank stare*

This sounds awesome! I mean, just think of how frustrating it would be to would be hackers to get their hands on this baby, only to find they would have to try maybe 100 different combinations to get to the data on the drive! They'd give up before they got to 10! LOL

I'm touched by the kind words. And the arses. Not literally touched by arses of course, as that might be inappropriate, but touched by the mention of arses within a post about me.

That sounded better before I started typing it.

Frankly the comments and this post are over and above the level of feedback I ever expected from my complaint about feedback. That so many people have the same feelings is gratifying, in the sense that it means I'm not a completely lonely hermit of the internet (inthermet?)

As for getting my name in gold leaf on a door, that was actually one of my unstated goals of starting a blog, so maybe you shouldn't give me too much credit.

I started writing for similar reasons to you - I was frustrated and angry at life for making my wife sick, and I needed an outlet. Since then my site has become more than that. I guess I just needed to know that other people liked or appreciated what it had become.

Thank you Ruben, you made my day. I'll try not to change my style :P

@Joshnunn You mean, like the way you have me in your blogroll on your site? ;)

As long as I'm still in there... IF I EVER WAS?! O_O

My site(s) are hand written by me, and although I'd love to say Firstwaves.org was a huge multi-author site, that just isn't the case :P Although I am independent and passionate.

Categorising my main site however might be difficult to do, as whether I'm an "independent writer who’s passionate about a topic" is very much up for debate, seeing as I lack much of any topic worth mentioning.

As for your site, I shall remove it from my reader, and henceforth visit it only on the third Tuesday of each month when the moon is at its zenith.

I use Socialite for OS X as my feed reader, and when I get behind on it it makes me very frustrated. And then I delete everything.

Hah, I used to do this to access apps on Windows XP which was sometimes needed to dual boot (for 3D apps - there's better support for that now). VMWare would ruin XP every couple of weeks but VirtualBox had much better results... including that you could override the MBR when booting through VBox so it would boot directly into XP instead of GRUB/LILO. Or using rdesktop to seamlessly put Windows programs in the gnome taskbar (again, better support for that now so it's built in)... the advantage of still using that method is you can have the virtual machine running headless on some server with special hardware and use rdesktop/vnc to bring the apps to a laptop.

Oh, VirtualBox hacks, how I long for thee.
