Don’t go to Comic-Con or you’re a sinning idol worshipper!

Wait, what?

Last week in a post titled Comic-con gets a new attraction, PZ Myers reported that the Westboro Baptist Church headed by Fred Phelps was going to picket this week’s Comic-Con on the basis that comics are riddled with false gods that won’t be able to save you. In Fred’s words:

The destruction of this nation is imminent — so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.

PZ Myers responds:

I don’t know why they’ve chosen Comic-con; maybe it’s because the attendees are mostly able to tell the difference between fantasy and reality, a grave sin to Phelps.

Ouch! :)

Now there isn’t much love on the net right now for Fred, but he does have several good points. Firstly, 2012 proved conclusively the end of the universe is neigh. Or is that just the Earth, I forget. Secondly, there isn’t a more dangerous, evil cross section of people in society than comic nerds, so naturally picketing their convention will be time well spent. They’ll all be cured too.

I’m still angry though!

In PZ Myer’s next blog post on the subject (Pick your comic book gods) he links to a page highlighting the top ten comic book gods, yet they make no mention of Suzumiya Haruhi. For those not in the know, she is the creator of Life, The Universe and Everything. The answer to The Great Question may be 42, but Haruhi is The Question itself.

A Hitchhikers and Haruhi reference mashup, that’s a first for me. Should have put some Dr Who, Gundam and Star Trek in there too I suppose, just to scare people like Fred Phelps even more.

Ah but wait, it’s too late! Even as early as 2006 she turned me into a false idol worshipper and invaded my computer! And it was running FreeBSD too, that stuff makes cracking Windows and Linux look like waltzing into a coffee shop and ordering a vanilla latte with extra foam. I’m a goner!

I think I’ll stop this post now, she’s starting to scare me. That reminds me, I still have my Haruhiism shirt somewhere. As I said, I’m a goner. Maybe Pete or Fred or whatever his name is needs to picket my computer desk.

The poor Japanese, can’t they live but one month of their lives without having a new Prime Minister thrust upon them? Fortunately I have a solution that I’m confident would work out, and save taxpayer money.

Firstly…

I suppose at this point you expect me to make an anime reference, because Japan is where it comes from. Well firstly I’m shocked and appalled that you’d assume I’m so much of a crass simpleton that I’d see places not for what they are but with sweeping, overt generalisations based on one of their recognisable industries.

I mean, do you expect every post I write about Ireland to mention praties floating in Guinness, or every post that mentions Singapore has to mention teh tarik and PCK? Best in Singapore and JB, and some say Batam? Really?!

And secondly…

Now that we’ve got that out of the way… we all know Suzumiya Haruhi would make the best Prime Minister.

She has drive, an "unconventional" way of solving problems and getting what she wants, the uncanny ability to make those she despises very uncomfortable, and she created the universe so if anyone were to know what makes it tick, it’d be her. And if she should falter she’d be no more or less effective than any of the six previous post holders, and better still she could just change the universe back to what it was before (as she’d rumoured to be doing so her second series never ends up appearing).

Unfortunately, despite being God she couldn’t be the Emperor because of her gender, though as PM she’d wield more legislative power anyway. She could also save the Diet billions over the course of her tenure by having Konata as one of her senior ministers because they’d both be voiced by the one person.

It’s pure, unmitigated genius, feel free to let me know why I’m right. Come to think of it, maybe she should come to Australia given we have no good choices in either major party.

The First Japanese Suzumiya Cabinet…?

Today was so ridiculously depressing what with stories like this and the fact I couldn’t see Steve Ballmer in Singapore made me think I needed to end today on a high note. I may have uncovered some of my old anime blog posts!

Hey remember…

Remember when I lost my university hosted anime blog in a database wipe? Well this afternoon I was going through one of my old hard drive image backups looking for mummy’s awesome recipe for guacamole. I talk to her every night in my dreams, but can’t ask her during the day. Wait, I’m supposed to be cheering myself up, enough of such thoughts.

Anyway buried in an otherwise nondescript folder I stumbled across some of my anime blog drafts! By that I mean the text files I wrote while sitting at my beloved Boatdeck Cafe or at Starbucks before I added all the XHTML paragraph and image markup. I would have just left a university class and had my spirits crushed, so it was a happy, uplifting thing to do :).

Daijoubu!

What’s even scarier is I just did a Toradora marathon again recently and that series was the last one I blogged about. I had the biggest otaku crush on Minori (Minorin to her friends!), possibly the biggest since Ami Mizuno. She had a visor mounted computer. I think I’ll stop now.

Anyway (I’ve preceded two paragraphs with that word now) it means I can start restoring all these lost posts!

So here comes the ultimate question: should I spin my anime blog off again now that I can restore some of it? Could I be bothered? Or perhaps a more question: do I have the time? Or even more pertinent: desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu desu! Nyoro~n.

See, that’s why I used to separate those posts out onto another blog. I remember I wrote an entire entry on using Minorin’s kinetic energy to power a city, and questioning how Negi could see anything through his glasses that were barely larger than coins. I had diagrams.

I’m cheered up now, all good ^^.

Explain yourself

For those who don’t know, Kyon is from The Shenanigans of Haruhi Suzumiya, and his fan inspired female Kyonko form has become a cult icon. A Google Image search or looking at any of the image boards will give you an idea of his/her/its pervasiveness, some even going as far as to say his female form is the hottest character that did/didn’t exist. Only in anime fandom, sheesh!

As a defence for us being Sailor Scots, in the original series of Sailor Moon The Three Lights were sought after idol men who transformed to superwomen, so is this really a stretch? You know what, don’t answer that, owe this whole fiasco to a lack of coffee at that time of day and embarrassment at the fact I was able to so successfully shred what remaining masculinity I had.

Come again?

Wait, I had masculinity? This is news to me. By the way, this is your cue to leave a comment telling me otherwise. This is how things like this work, you see.

Okay I admit it, I didn’t make Rubenko, a friend of mine from Singapore did and sent me the screenshot along with several disparaging remarks. I’m just glad she covered me up as much as she could, because as the table demonstrates, sunlight is my enemy. That table and Kyonko were entirely my fault, you can tell because the design is suckier, to use the technical terms. Because the desginer didn’t have a cardigan I had to make the gloves cardigan coloured which didn’t really work.

I’m going to need a really, really big… cup of coffee.

I so thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the previous episode of K-On! without really talking much about at all, I thought I’d repeat this winning recipe. Recipe, dang I could use some of their tea and cake, I wish there had been a music club like theirs when I was still in high school!

While I’m obviously way behind given the second season has started, I’ve seen enough of the rheims of fanart (doesn’t Rheem make water heaters?) that I knew what to expect from this one. You know where I’m going with this, so much so I’m phrasing this sentence as a statement and not a question.

Yes, this episode was all about the girls from the light music club dressing in very formal attire which, I admit, was quite a gamble seeing as the otaku community haven’t really been exposed to such an idea before and haven’t seemed to be very receptive to it. Apparently there are even cafes in Japan and Singapore where people dress up in such clothing, though obviously nerdy guys are forced to attend them because they wouldn’t want to otherwise.

Kyoani and the original manga writers and artists really went out on a limb here, which I assume would be quite painful given I banged one of my shins on a table this morning and I yelped. Isn’t that a phone company? This whole paragraph with its intentional misunderstandings was terrible even by my own standards which is scary. My anime review writing standards are the stuff of Halloween legends, at least that’s what I’ve been told, by me.

The trackpad on my laptop just stopped working for some reason, and the lights at the cafe I’m typing this at just flickered as a lightling bolt hit outside. I think the Gods are telling me to stop going so flagrantly off point and get back to reviewing. Either that or my tracking finger has stopped working. That really didn’t sound right.

Okay, so what was I talking about? Oh yeah, eyebrows. I’d never really paid any attention to them before until I realised just how few characters in animated programmes had them, or if they did they were just pencil lines. Some people in the real world even get by with just pencil line eyebrows, what a lot of work.

Eh I give up, at some point in a review about an episode I should talk about… the episode. Right? So in this episode Yui’s sister graduates and joins the other girls. The Light Music club tried their best to recruit other members by putting on a kick arse concert that’s packed to the rafters… sorry, that bad Aussie comedy ruined that expression for me. Packed… yeah, it was packed.

See this is where my cognitave dissonance starts coming in. The obsessive senpai who dresses the girls in ridiculous outfits and the fact the Hirasawa siblings have never seemed to have had an argument I can deal with, but how could you put on a show like that and get nobody? I suppose Japanese society is even more conservative than I thought :P

I… well, that is to say… um, that is… I was thinking… um… Mugi!!! Wait, sorry I got distracted again. What I will say though is even though everyone else no doubt was more interested in seeing Azusa (the only person interested in joining!) I appreciated the fact Mugi was in it more. Everyone thinks Mio is the best, and for a period of time I agreed with them, but we all know Mugi is now, right?

And they wonder why they can’t get anyone to join their club when this is what they get as a welcome! Well that first part was okay, but being crushed… though I can imagine some people would go for that… Mio and Azusa are the only ones pulling reasonable expressions! Wait, that’s not what I meant. I think I’ll sleep now.
